Fortnite Chapter 3 season 2 is almost upon us. We're in the final week of season 1, so things are about to change very soon. As always, you can expect Epic to whip up a few significant gameplay changes, a new battle pass, and lots of new skins.
Chapter 3 got off to a banger of a start, finally adding in Spider-Man, a wealth of new gameplay mechanics like sliding and giant item-spewing dinosaurs, and a whole new map full of crazy weather effects. In short, season 2 has big shoes to fill.
If you're just wondering when Fortnite Chapter 3 season 2 starts, we've got the likely date below, along all the season 2 leaks, rumors, and official teasers we could pull together. Read on for the season 2 start date, battle pass details, and more.
When does season 2 of Fortnite start?
According to the info on the season 1 battle pass page, Fortnite Chapter 3 season 2 is expected to start on March 20. It's similarly worth noting that the 20th is a Sunday.
When is the next Fortnite live event in 2022?
At the time of writing, it unfortunately looks like there won't be a big live event to help ring in Fortnite season 2. Data miners like HypeX say they haven't come across any files to indicate there will be an event, which will almost assuredly disappoint some fans who have come to expect a big show to kick off a new season.
Of course, Epic could still have something up their sleeve. As laid out in the section below, the Fortnite Chapter 3 map has undergone some small but significant changes over the inaugural season. These include giant holes dug by truck-sized drillers.
Keep in mind that Epic could also be planning to start season 2 off with a bang, rather than closing out season 1 with an event.
Fortnite Chapter 3 season 2 leaks
Leaks have been a little spotty thus far, but reliable data miner HypeX has discovered a new tank vehicle codenamed "TreadVehicle" that we suspect will play a role in season 2. The vehicle can actually already be found at Logjam Lumberyard, but it's not driveable.
Last month, another data miner named Tabor Hill also posted a video detailing a suspected war between IO forces and the Seven.
“We’re going to be at, almost like a war with the IO people. The IO is coming back for revenge," they said. "We flipped the map, we made them mad, the beehive has been hit. They’re coming for revenge. So if they’re going to fight us and the Seven, they’re going to need some serious equipment, something like [the drill]."
HypeX similarly theorized that IO is drilling through the map to reach the side players and the Seven currently inhabit. They shared an image of five locations they suspect will turn into IO bases, preceded by earthquakes.
The IO & Slone are most likely drilling their way to this map.. The Scientist warns us about earthquakes in challenges and there's also an unreleased "Drill Beacon/Scanner" Gadget. And there's these upcoming locations of the IO.. We might even get the Snow Slone in one of them. pic.twitter.com/qLyeEKdaYPDecember 10, 2021
According to HypeX, we'll also see earthquake fault lines begin to crack open along the roads just outside Tilted Towers.
Here's where the earthquake cracks will appear (the red lines), it's most likely multiple drillers or one going through the map looking for something, they enter Tilted for a short time but then they stop next to The Devoured landmark, and they also pop out of those 3 X's pic.twitter.com/G8oDQ52UENFebruary 23, 2022
On the gameplay front, it's possible that we'll see a tactical sprint mechanic get added, according to HypeX. A "clamber" mechanic is also supposedly on the docket, suggesting that players may be able to climb structures by hand. In my mind, that means something like Breath of the Wild's stamina-draining climb, or possibly a ledge grab ala first-person parkour games. In addition to all that, we'll evidently see jetpacks return in some form, possibly as loot chest items.
